A whole-house digital
audio system was already doing that, was built years before EdS, and carries
on exactly as it did. EdS listens in on it. This page is the short version;
the project’s own page has the whole of it:
S/PDIF Audio Distribution.

Whole-house digital sound distribution

One digital feed (S/PDIF) is sent from the basement to every room, and each
room’s own stereo plays it.

Layer Boundaries

Layer Boundaries

Each component of EdS is built to do one well-defined job, and to do it
without knowing how its neighbors do theirs. It takes a plain input, returns
a plain output, and keeps everything in between to itself: much as
abstraction and encapsulation work in object-oriented programming, applied to
services and devices in place of classes.

That is what lets each part be built, tested and tuned alone, and replaced
without the others noticing.
palette
can be tuned against a folder of
JPEGs with nothing else running. A different diffuser wants a different
gamma curve, and that changes the firmware and nothing upstream of it.
